Order-Item Level Packaging
Bind packaging to the sales item — prevent wrong packing and shipping errors at the source.
What problem does it solve?
Packaging information is managed apart from the sales item; wrong pack type, missing detail and shipment mismatch drive both cost and customer dissatisfaction.
How does the solution work?
Conforcus's order-item level packaging makes packing information definable per sales item, carries it through the order-to-delivery flow and ensures it's applied consistently at shipment.
What changes in practice?
Packaging information is held in fields on the sales order item. When the order is entered or changed (VA01/VA02), the packaging and packing details that apply to that item are defined there, and different items on the same order each carry their own. When the delivery (VL01N) is created the information is passed on to it, so the warehouse and packing team sees on its own document what the sales side defined. Because the structure is aligned with handling unit and packaging logic, what is defined on the item matches the packing step at shipment.
The right packaging is now defined at order stage, item by item; the warehouse team does not search for the packing requirement in separate notes or lists but finds it on the delivery. Since sales operations, logistics and the warehouse use the same data, mismatches caused by pack type or missing detail are resolved at order entry rather than at shipment. The information travels on the documents from order to delivery, so it is traceable: when a complaint arrives, what was defined for the item and what was passed to the delivery can be seen from the records. Returns, costs and complaints caused by mispacking decrease.
Benefits
- Correct packaging is defined per item upfront — no surprises at shipment
- Returns, costs and complaints from mispacking are reduced
- Packaging detail flows consistently and traceably from order to delivery

Frequently asked questions
How does it relate to SAP's standard handling unit management; is a separate structure built?
The solution makes packaging and packing information definable at sales order item level and passes it on to the delivery. The structure is set up to align with standard handling unit and packaging logic, so it does not replace the packing step at shipment; it makes the information that step needs available from the order stage onwards. Which packaging details are held on the item is defined during setup according to the company's packing practice.
Who enters the packaging information and at what stage, and where does the warehouse team see it?
The information is defined item by item when the sales order is entered or changed (VA01/VA02). When the delivery (VL01N) is created, the same information is passed on to it, and the warehouse and packing team sees it on its own document while preparing the shipment. The packing requirement therefore no longer depends on notes kept outside the system or on separate lists.
What if items on the same order need different packaging, or the order changes later?
Because packaging information is held at item level rather than on the order header, every item carries its own packing details, and different packaging definitions can sit side by side on the same order. When the information is updated on the order, it is passed in its current form to the delivery created afterwards. The packaging applied at shipment thus stays consistent with what was defined on the order and remains traceable from order to delivery.
